Trees planted to complete New Park Road safety scheme

At last the New Park Road safety scheme is finished! Trees have now been planted in the tree pits to complete works on the New Park Road safety scheme, funded by Transport for London and Lambeth Council.

It started in 2015 with anxious parents at Richard Atkins Primary School asking their local Councillors to make New Park Road safer for their children. It was used as a rat run, and several had been injured as a result.

After considerable consultation with residents from a wide area, some false
starts, and a certain amount of ill feeling, Sustrans, our consultants in the project,
came up with the present layout. Funded partly by the Council, but mainly by TfL, the
final stage has been reached – a dozen or so trees planted to complement the chicane,
the build-outs, the coloured circles and the raised road level. Continue reading →

Dumbarton Road incident resolved earlier – thank you to police and Council staff

Following a situation that lasted much of the day involving police at an address at Dumbarton Road, the area was declared safe shortly after 5pm. Residents who had been evacuated from nearby properties were allowed to return home and an arrest has been made. An imitation firearm was recovered at the scene.

Our thanks to the police for resolving the situation and to Lambeth Council staff who supported residents and took care of several at the council’s offices.

Lambert Road leak finally being repaired

img_6731Last Friday, Councillor Martin Tiedemann was one of several local residents to report a major leak on Lambert Road at the corner with Bonham Road. Thames Water responded to say it was aware of the leak and it would be attended shortly.

By Saturday, there appeared to have been no action and large holes had appeared in the road surface. Lambert Road is on the London Cycle Network and heavily used by cyclists, so water-filled potholes are especially dangerous. Water was streaming down both Lambert and Bonham Roads and even down along Brixton Hill. Cllr Tiedemann continued to press Thames Water to take action, to keep residents informed and to screen off the dangerous road surface. Christmas fetes this weekend

Brixton Hill’s two principal Christmas fairs take place this weekend. On Saturday 3rd December Corpus Christi Primary School will hold its fair 12-4 with Santa’s Grotto plus food and goodies, compered by Miranda Sawyer and Richard Avery.

This is followed by Sudbourne School’s Winter Fair on Sunday 1-4 with the traditional stalls and raffle. Entrance £1.

Corpus Christi schoolchildren are also taking part in the switch-on of Brixton’s Christmas lights tonight (Friday 2nd December) at 6pm.
