24/7 off licences on Brixton Hill forced to reduce hours

The Licensing Sub-Committee last night imposed strict new conditions on two 24-hour off-licences on Brixton Hill. Council officials and the Police applied for the shops to be reviewed following allegations of serious breaches of their conditions, including the employment of illegal workers in both cases and the lack of proper security and management in one case in an area of high public nuisance.

Both cases were settled following negotiations between the shopowners, the Police and the Council. While no side got entirely what they were after, consensus was reached on a set of new conditions to ensure proper employment methods, measures to deter street drinkers and a reduction of hours so neither shop is open overnight. The allegations were particularly serious and the Police and Council had initially asked for the licences to be revoked altogether, so this compromise allows the businesses to continue trading on the condition that the issues are resolved.

Premier Food & Wine at 112 Brixton Hill will now be open until 11pm Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Costcutter at 98 Brixton Hill will open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, and they will also ensure that they install a door and shutter so the premises can be secured overnight.

Cllr Martin Tiedemann was able to address the committee and a number of local residents made representations in writing that the committee took into account before signing off the conditions.

Next Your New Town Hall construction forum takes place on 4th April

YNTH-sketchAs construction works continue on the Town Hall and new Civic Centre, the developers and Council have issued details of the next construction forum for for the local community, residents and businesses to raise issues and hear about next steps.

Following on from the 3rd Neighbourhood Construction Forum, which was held on Thursday 1st December 2016, the 4th Neighbourhood Construction Forum will be held on Tuesday 4th April 6pm-8.30pm at Morgan Sindall’s Site Office, Ivor House, 1-9 Acre Lane.

The purpose of this Forum is to have regular, productive communications between the contractor and the local community throughout the construction period. This will be a meeting where issues or concerns can be raised, and dealt with, ensuring that everyone is kept up to date with what is happening on site.

Clapham Park Masterplan to be unveiled this week

In January, Metropolitan Housing held the second round of consultation events on the Clapham Park ‘masterplan’. Residents spent time designing their ideal community hub, new buildings, open spaces and streets at the interactive workshops.

Following the creative workshops, Metropolitan will be unveiling the masterplan for the first time at drop-in events on Saturday 25 March 11am to 3pm and Thursday 30 March 3pm to 8pm. Both events will be held at the Pop-up Shop, next to Sainsbury’s on King’s Avenue SW4 8EU. You still have time to influence the final masterplan so please go and let them know what you think.

#WeStandTogether – statement on Westminster terror attack

Lambeth Council and Cllr Florence Eshalomi AM are among those who have issued the joint statement below on yesterday’s terror attack.

Today was an attack on our democracy, but together we will not let the terrorists use fear to divide us nor will we let them succeed.

Our Lambeth community, and all Londoners, will have been shocked by the scenes from Westminster. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

We thank Lambeth police and the Metropolitan police for their swift response and utmost professionalism to keep us safe, and regretfully mourn the loss of their heroic colleague.

The council and partner agencies are supporting the police to ensure we continue with our daily lives in safety. We ask everyone to remain calm and vigilant of any suspicious activity. If you have any information in relation to this incident please call 0800 789 321.

Formal consultation launched on Controlled Parking Zones for Brixton Hill

Proposals around Morrish Road

From today residents can respond to a consultation on proposals for new controlled parking zones either side of Brixton Hill up to the South Circular. The council has taken the decision to proceed with the implementation of a Controlled Parking Zone, subject to the outcome of the statutory consultation.

This follows an informal consultation late last year, which showed support for controlled parking in those areas without a CPZ currently. The proposals have been guided by the detailed comments residents made, including the hours of operation. Efforts have been made to have a mix of areas that are residents only as well as metered parking, so that there are options for visitors to the area but commuter parking is deterred.

This follows a great deal of work by residents and councillors to highlight the issue and ensure the Council understood the need for parking controls to deal with increased pressure from commuter parking. Continue reading →

Tickets for 2017 guided tours of Brixton Windmill now available

Brixton Windmill is open to the public for guided tours from March to October and tickets are now available for the first open weekend of the year 25/26 March.  Tickets for the open days can be booked on the website of the Friends of Windmill Gardens. Tickets will be released one month prior to each Open Day weekend.

Because of the limited space inside the windmill, the number of people that can go on a full tour is limited to three adults or two adults and two children. This means that tours can be booked up very quickly. If there are cancellations, the Friends advertise these on Twitter at @brixtonwindmill. Short tours to the first floor are also available on the open days.

New education centre for Windmill given planning go-ahead

Lambeth’s Planning Department has approved plans for a new education centre at Windmill Gardens. The building will be used to run workshops for schools and other groups as well as supporting the regular programme of Windmill open days and other events.

Having a dedicated building will also allow the Friends of Windmill Gardens to expand their milling activities and develop a social enterprise selling flour to local bakeries, restaurants and retailers, as well as running baking workshops, to fund the education programme. The Friends will also be able to sell and store merchandise, which helps to raise much needed funds for the windmill. When it is not being used for Friends’ activities, the building will be available to hire, at affordable rates, by community groups and others.

Lambeth Council has provided £360,000 to fund the construction of the building and further fundraising is planned by the Friends to fund activities.

Public consultation regarding Glenbrook Primary School this week

invitation20to20a20public20consultation20templateGlenbrook Primary School is hosting two public consultation events later this week for residents to find out more about plans to rebuild the primary school and outline plans to put a brand new secondary school on the same site on Kings Avenue.

The plans for the new school buildings have been given the go-ahead by the Government and a planning application will be made shortly. If approved, construction would start this summer and is expected to be completed by September 2018 for the primary school. Residents will also be able to comment on suggestions for the proposed secondary school’s name.

Developers Bowmer & Kirkland, in partnership with the school, will host two public consultation events at Glenbrook Primary School on Friday 10th March, 15.30 to 20.00 and Saturday 11th March, 10.00 to 13.00. Residents are invited to come along to find out more information and to have questions answered.

Letter sent to Mayor re dangerous junctions following another serious accident

Cllr Martin Tiedemann has written to Sadiq Khan regarding dangerous junctions on the A23 Brixton Hill following another accident last month that has left a cyclist with serious injuries.

Three years ago, Cllr Tiedemann wrote to the previous Mayor, highlighting the junctions of Brixton Hill with Brixton Water Lane/Trent Road/Lambert Road/Josephine Avenue. These junctions, which comprise part of London Cycle Network Route 25, were originally prioritised for action but were subsequently dropped from Boris Johnson’s plans. Now, with a new Mayor and further accidents, Brixton Hill’s councillors are calling for urgent action. Continue reading →
