New trees on their way for Brixton Hill

Following lobbying by Brixton Hill councillors, a number of new street trees are to be located around the area a part of a Lambeth-wide programme. Whilst contributing to create a more attractive environment for all, the planting will also improve the overall environmental quality, (including air quality and noise reduction), of our neighbourhood.

Subject to final ground scan surveys the locations chosen are:

  1. Baytree Road (several including Ginkgo and Juneberry trees, sadly no Baytrees)
  2. Lyham Road (a number of ornamental pear trees)
  3. Sudbourne Road (nine new trees including oak, Prunus and field maple)
  4. Trent Road (four to include a crabapple)

Treeplanting is starting this month and will continue through to April. Residents in roads affected are currently being written to to let them know about the project.

The borough-wide planting programme will be funded by the Transport for London LIP and GLA grants.

Hard work by local residents features on CNBC!

the happy gardenersAmerican news channel CNBC has featured the work of residents of Sulina and Morrish Roads, supported by Lambeth Council, to improve their local environment.

Earlier this month, local residents around the top of Brixton Hill organised a Community Freshview day. Lambeth Council provided tools and materials so that residents could make planters to brighten up areas where rubbish was formerly dumped.

This follows similar Community Freshview days earlier in the autumn in Hayter and Sudbourne Roads where residents painted walls and trimmed hedges, as well as installing new planters. Community Freshview is an award-winning scheme organised by Lambeth Council.

Now CNBC have picked up the hard work of Sulina and Morrish Road residents in their feature on ‘secret gardens’ in London. They quoted Charmian Kenner, the well-known chair of the local residents’ association: “We’ve discovered that if you put any kinds of plants or flowers on the street, this deters people from dumping rubbish. They begin to see the area in a different way. If you make the area look nice and attractive it no longer conjures up thoughts of dumping rubbish.”
