A burst water pipe this morning at 04.50am has caused major disruption and could potentially mean that Brixton Hill is closed until after the weekend. This has now been found to be a 12-inch pipe rather than an 18-inch water main, but the volume of water this morning saw Brixton Hill become a torrent and streams of people walking from Streatham to Brixton as buses were caught up in the jam.
Below is an update on the event and the action that Thames Water is taking:
Thames Water have excavated the damaged pipe and are preparing to cut out the broken section. They have said that they will be working on replacing this as quickly as they can.
No buildings appear to have been flooded and damage beyond the immediate road surface is currently minimal.
They do not expect water supplies in the area to be affected by the burst but are keeping bottled water supplies and tankers on standby in the area as a contingency.
Brixton Hill is currently closed and diversions are in place, but Thames Water will discuss plans to re-open the road with Transport for London (TfL).
Councillors have stressed that permanent traffic diversions cannot lead to further burden to existing rat runs such as Dumbarton and Lyham Road. We have also made clear that Thames Water need to do more to reduce the number and impact of burst pipes in Streatham and Brixton Hill. Today there have also burst pipes in Leigham Vale and St Julian’s Farm Road. This level of disruption is unacceptable and Thames Water need to address this urgently.

A group of local residents have started a change.org petition calling on Transport for London to introduce a direct bus service along the South Circular between Tulse Hill and Clapham South. This would serve Brixton Hill residents near to Christchurch Road and Streatham Place.
Campaigners say that, currently, travellers (especially children going to school) need to take two buses via congested Brixton or Streatham, or walk along polluted main roads. Others choose to drive on what are relatively short journeys.
Over 100 people have already signed the petition and residents have put together a video about the campaign.

Parents of children at Corpus Christi Primary school have joined Brixton Hill’s councillors and Labour’s London Assembly candidate to call on the Mayor of London to make a dangerous Brixton junction after another serious accident this week. Adrian, Florence and Martin met parents this afternoon to see the issue and plan next steps.
The junction of Brixton Hill and Brixton Water Lane was originally named by Transport for London as one of the 100 most dangerous junctions in the whole of London yet the Mayor failed to allocate any funding to make the junction safer and the Better Junctions programme has since been downgraded.
A notice has appeared today in the Lambeth Weekender outlining that the Council intend to allow a month-long temporary closure to cars of New Park Park Road at the junction with Brixton Hill, starting 9th December.
The closure is to allow for essential gas works and will not be at all times of day, regulated by signs. Continue reading →
Local Councillor Martin Tiedemann has welcomed the response from the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to his December letter calling for junctions and pedestrian on Brixton Hill to be improved.
As Cllr Tiedemann’s letter set out, the junctions with Brixton Water Lane/Trent Road and with Josephine Avenue were listed by the Mayor’s office as among the 100 requiring improvement but the Mayor has only allocated funding to 33 of those junctions. Cllr Tiedemann wrote to Boris Johnson and local Assembly Member Val Shawcross CBE asking for funding to be allocated to Brixton Hill to address road safety issues. Continue reading →
Transport for London are consulting on their plan to cut the 159 bus route short at its northern end, so that it will terminate at Marble Arch instead of Paddington. TfL say this measure would not affect bus frequency but would improve reliability, but there would no longer be a link all the way to Paddington Station by bus from Brixton Hill.
