Val Shawcross urges TfL to take action on dangerous junction

valjunctionLocal London Assembly Member Val Shawcross has urged Transport for London to take action over the dangerous junction at Brixton Hill with Acre Lane.

Val has received figures showing that from 2012-2014 there were 15 pedestrian casualties at the junction, more than other hotspots in the area. Val has tabled a series of questions to the Mayor of London asking what plans TfL have to improve the area and make it safe.

Val told the South London Press: “The area around this junction has been transformed during my time as Assembly member for the area and the new space at Windrush Square shows what can be done to create a brilliant public realm. So many people live, work and visit Brixton and travel through this key junction so to see these accident figures is alarming. As well as being a very attractive street scene we also want this key area to be as safe as possible. Councillors call on Mayor to sort dangerous Brixton junction

IMG_4244Parents of children at Corpus Christi Primary school have joined Brixton Hill’s councillors and Labour’s London Assembly candidate to call on the Mayor of London to make a dangerous Brixton junction after another serious accident this week. Adrian, Florence and Martin met parents this afternoon to see the issue and plan next steps.

The junction of Brixton Hill and Brixton Water Lane was originally named by Transport for London as one of the 100 most dangerous junctions in the whole of London yet the Mayor failed to allocate any funding to make the junction safer and the Better Junctions programme has since been downgraded.

Councillors and the school have been making representations to the Mayor and Transport for London for some time via the local Assembly Member Valerie Shawcross, with the Mayor pledging to take action in a letter to Cllr Tiedemann last year. Ms Shawcross has pledged to write a firm letter to the Mayor demanding an urgent safety review.

Martin Tiedemann writes to Boris Johnson about road safety on Brixton Hill

IMG_1169Brixton Hill councillor Martin Tiedemann has written to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, about issues of road safety on Brixton Hill. Specifically he has raised the lack of measures taken to improve the junctions with Brixton Water Lane and with Josephine Avenue, despite these two junctions being identified as among the top 100 in London prioritised for improvement. In the Mayor’s latest announcement, only 33 of the 100 have been allocated funding.

Councillor Tiedemann also raised the need to improve cycle lanes along Brixton Hill and pedestrian crossings following concerns raised by Corpus Christi Primary School.
