Acre Lane is to be closed to traffic entering from Brixton Hill on 29th April to allow a crane to be brought onto the development site by the Town Hall. The footpath on that side of Acre Lane between the Town Hall and Buckner Road will also be closed and buses will be diverted. Traffic will be able to travel east along Acre Lane into Brixton but delays are possible.
As construction works continue on the Town Hall and new Civic Centre, the developers and Council have issued details of the next construction forum for for the local community, residents and businesses to raise issues and hear about next steps.
Following on from the 3rd Neighbourhood Construction Forum, which was held on Thursday 1st December 2016, the 4th Neighbourhood Construction Forum will be held on Tuesday 4th April 6pm-8.30pm at Morgan Sindall’s Site Office, Ivor House, 1-9 Acre Lane.
The purpose of this Forum is to have regular, productive communications between the contractor and the local community throughout the construction period. This will be a meeting where issues or concerns can be raised, and dealt with, ensuring that everyone is kept up to date with what is happening on site.

The New Town Hall project was granted planning permission earlier this autumn. It is hoped that construction will commence early next year but, in the meantime, the partners are consulting on a ‘Construction & Environmental Management Plan’ (CEMP). The deadline for feedback on this document is Thursday 3rd December at 12 noon.

People walking past the Town Hall over the summer may have noticed some new additions to the flower beds outside by a local artist. Beautiful hand-painted butterflies were installed by local artist Magdalen Rubalcava to brighten up Brixton and ‘make people smile’.
Magdalen, who is well known locally from her work at Brixton Windmill, was supported by Brixton Hill councillor Adrian Garden and Veolia in the project. She made almost 100 butterflies by hand in various materials, building up to a grand Butterfly Finale ahead of the closure of the Town Hall for refurbishment.
The butterflies, which featured in the South London Press, are now moving to other locations in Lambeth and will be auctioned off for FoodCycle.
Last week Lambeth Planning Committee voted unanimously to give planning permission to the New Town Hall project, comprising the refurbishment of the Town Hall, a new civic complex on Town Hall Parade, new housing to replace Hambrook House and Olive Morris House further along Brixton Hill, the conversion of Ivor House on Acre Lane and new public space on Buckner Road.
Residents addressed the meeting and were able to give eloquent accounts of their concerns regarding both the construction and the impact of the new developments. The developers, Muse, also addressed the meeting and outlined how the project had already changed to try and reflect residents’ issues after two years of consultation. The plans for the redevelopment of the Town Hall and Olive Morris House, and the new Civic Centre on Brixton Hill will be considered by the Planning Applications Committee on 1 September.
Councillors who are members of the PAC will consider the plans along with submissions from the public, Historic England and other stakeholders.
As well as the new offices for Council staff and facilities for council functions like the registry office, almost 200 new homes are planned for the various sites.
Members of the public may attend the meeting, although only those who have made representations in advance will have the opportunity to address the Committee so that their concerns can be taken into account. The meeting takes place at Room 8, Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton Hill at 7pm on Tuesday 1st September.
Cllr Paul McGlone, Deputy Leader of Lambeth Council, has written a blogpost outlining the current status of the Your New Town Hall project, explaining how we got here and why it’s important for residents to get involved, with 120 already having attended the latest round of consultation events.
Key issues addressed by Cllr McGlone include how the project will save taxpayers money and what it will cost; the 200 new homes on site, with 40% classed as ‘affordable’; the 45 apprenticeships and over 700 jobs created during construction; the Impact Hub for start-up and small businesses; and landscaping of the site. As plans continue to be developed for the New Town Hall and council office sites along Brixton Hill, local residents are being invited to consultation meetings later this month to further consider ideas for the new buildings.
Reports on local blogs mistakenly suggested that the historic (and iconic) Electric Brixton on Town Hall Parade would now form part of the development. Brixton Blog has now corrected this and the Council has confirmed that there are no plans for the site. The neighbouring building currently housing the Fridge Bar has always been part of the redevelopment proposals alongside Hambrook House, Olive Morris House and council buildings on Buckner Road. A new working and collaboration space is being opened in Brixton Hill, providing a new opportunity for start-up businesses.
Impact Hubs are made by and for local entrepreneurs: “start-ups, innovators, creatives and social businesses, makers, doers and dreamers”. Part of a global network, Impact Hub Brixton will build a pilot project at Lambeth Town Hall on Brixton Hill and offer flexible co-working space for however much people need each month.
The vision is to offer a unique ecosystem of resources and support for Impact Hub’s members, connecting them to over 7,000 collaborative entrepreneurs and change-makers worldwide.
To develop the vision, the organisers are looking for local entrepreneurs and organisations to work together to shape and build Impact Hub Brixton. They want the membership base to be diverse and embrace all kinds of local SMEs, start-ups, social ventures, creative businesses, consultants and freelancers.

Local residents have two opportunities to donate blood at the Town Hall during December. The NHS is calling on people to donate blood during the festive period, which it describes as a “challenging time for blood stocks”.
The NHS said, “Donating doesn’t cost a penny and saves lives, meaning many more children and adults can spend precious time with their families over Christmas.”
Those with O Rh negative and B Rh negative blood types are especially in need, but donors are wanted from all blood groups.
